New Media Faith

I wrote previously about the Pope being on Youtube. Not surprising, many religious organisations have gone online and are using new media to reach out to the faithful!

I think it’s great that we can now listen to sermons online via podcasts, or even view services  online.  Many churches in Singapore have also started posting videos on Youtube, so that members of the congregation who missed the service or who want to watch or listen to it again can do so.

You can read or even view others’ testimonies online, or post your own at http://www.newcreation.org.sg/testimonies/testimonies.htm.  You can even watch Miracle TV on Lighthouse Evangelism and view a youtube video on the Book of Revelation . And if you want to donate to the church, you can also do that online at http://www.covenantvision.org/index.php?option=com_donation&Itemid=88.

There are online bookstores where you can purchase books, CDs and more.

Some may say that  such online faith is only a substitute. Listening to a podcast or watching a Youtube video is not the same as going to church. But such online resources can be of great help. Church services could be on only once or twice a week, but online, you can get your faith messages at all times of the week! Church Facebook groups also help to connect  members of a congregation.

New media is making it convenient to have faith and build up faith. I think that’s a good thing, as long as it doesn’t become a convenient faith.

What do you think?

What a huge topic! For sure I think these things have benefits. For instance, I listen to several sermons a week, and I doubt I’d do that without the move to release sermons in podcast form. I’ve read tons of inspiring things online, and I’ve been deeply shaped by some of the God-led things I’ve seen. At the same time, I can certainly see how convenience could lead to apathy. Tendencies toward isolation are also very possible. It’s definitely a tough issue to wrestle with.

HI, thanks for your comments. I think it’s a good thing that churches are using new media to reach out. Many young people are already using new media in other aspects of their lives, so why not spiritual growth too? Like I’ve said, making it convenient to have faith is not bad thing, but not so when people start to have a convenient faith.

    Hello Mdm,

I’m still updating my blog, though less frequent because of a recent spate of problems arising, both health, as well as my computer’s network problem. I’m just here to tell you that I haven’t given up on my blog yet. Please check back occasionally. Thank you. =D

    Hello,

I think Religious Organisations going online is an amazing thing. Since youths like me(hehehehe!) prefer blog-hopping or doing something related to the computer and the internet, such organisations going online would help youth keep in touch with their faith.

It’s like a 24/7 thing. Anytime we need the “Higher Power”, online sites like Youtube helps greatly!

As for me, I keep up-to-date with Hillsong via Youtube. This allows me to listen to their Gospel songs and etc @

So,kudos to Organisations going NEW MEDIA!

I think this is an interesting topic because everybody has a higher belief be it a specific God or idol or even not believing in any higher order is already a belief in itself.
Anyway, I think that it is interesting that such sermons are made avaliable on the world wide web as it enables those in countries that ban access to such materials to have another source of information. However, it is important that these religions do not put up any form of criticism about other religions.
